We designed the patterned stitches that are used in this pattern ourselves, by experimenting with different combinations of straight stitches, french knots and seed beads. Through making the stitches different lengths, stitching them in different directions and overlapping the thread in different ways, we developed lots of stitch patterns that were different to the traditional stitches you usually find in embroidery kits. Next, we started experimenting with the different types of threads we could use to make the design look modern and textured - we knew we wanted to use stranded cotton, as this is a thread that most stitchers are familiar with, and it creates a silky, smooth texture. Alongside this, we have added some crewel wool, acrylic yarn and worsted wool - all of which add threads of different thicknesses, shine and texture into the design.
Usually, people’s worry about stitching onto dark coloured fabric, is that it is much more difficult to trace a design onto a darker fabric. We have eliminated this issue, as we have pre-stitched the outlines of the flowers and leaves for you, ready for you to start filling each section of the design with stitches and beads. When choosing which colours to use in the project, we decided to combine lilacs, yellows, greys, greens and purples to create a really fresh palette that would sit with the contemporary style of the embroidery - we hope you love the shades we have picked as much as we do!
Whether you enjoy doing your creative projects at home, or prefer to stitch on the go, we have packed all of the materials you will need into a cardboard box, enclosed inside a piece of tissue paper. The only thing you will need is a pair of scissors to snip the ends of the threads when you have finished stitching each section! The list of materials that are included in the kit are as below:
